Conference Day 3
Open Space Gathering

Arrival Tea and Coffee: 8.30am
Program: 9.00am - 4.00pm

On Saturday 23rd November, the Conference will be conducted in Open Space Technology (OST) format. This will draw on the collective expertise of participants to create a highly interactive and enjoyable collaborative learning experience.

The convening theme for the Open Space will be:

Where to now: how do we shape the future of Restorative Practice…

      • starting with me?
      • where I work and live?
      • in a particular field of practice or location?
      • in and for the global social movement?

Over the last thirty years, Open Space Technology has been used in hundreds of thousands of events, on every continent, to enable groups to explore complex questions and issues. Open Space works like this:

  • At the beginning of the day, participants will meet in a large circle format.
  • You will have the opportunity, if you wish, to convene one or more conversations about any aspect of the above theme which you care to talk about.
  • Participants then self-organise into smaller break-out spaces, in multiple parallel sessions.
  • There is no limit to the number of conversations that can be convened.
  • Your freedom to participate at whatever level you wish will be respected.
  • Towards the end of the day, there will be an opportunity for ‘next steps’ action-planning, where groups can exchange contact details and decide how to keep conversations going after the conference.

 Open Space enables:

  • themes from keynote addresses and workshops to be explored, conversationally, in more depth
  • interaction around themes which cross multiple fields of practice
  • deepening of professional networks

Please note that conversations in OST format typically evolve as small interactive groups rather than formal presentations. The self-organising nature of the Open Space means that the organisers cannot guarantee access to any specific room or provide facilities for electronic (PowerPoint) presentations. Open Space does not lend itself to remote access/participation.

The Open Space at this conference will be facilitated by Michael Wood.

Michael has over 30 years' experience working with teams, groups, organisations and individuals to collaboratively create spirited spaces in which participants can talk and listen to each other about what matters most to them.

As well as being trained in Restorative Conferencing, Michael has a particular passion for Open Space Technology (OST). He has facilitated hundreds of Open Space meetings, including with many large groups, ranging in size from 100-500 people. Michael has attended two international conferences on Open Space Technology; and has conducted many OST action-learning workshops around Australia. Michael loves the way in which OST creates conditions for rich conversation, creativity and a good deal of fun.

Michael is based in Melbourne where he works as a facilitator and ICF Professional Certified Coach. He is a member of the Australian Association for Restorative Justice and is on the AARJ committee.
